About Erin Thompson Studio

Erin Thompson Studio (See www.ErinThompsonStudio.com for more of my work, and follow me on Instagram @ErinThompsonStudio) I'm Erin Malick Thompson, an artist and designer living in the Capitol Hill/Eastern Market neighborhood of Washington, DC, with my husband and two children. I create custom portraits of moments, people, and places of meaning in your life (parents and their children, a mom nursing, siblings together, kids with their grandparents, people with a beloved pet, the family home, your childhood home, a favorite restaurant that closed, etc). I have been drawing and creating artwork since I was a small child, when I would pay my sister in candy bars so she would model for me (clothed!). Prior to the pandemic lockdown, I could frequently be found doing quick sketches of fellow commuters and people around the neighborhood and on Metro or the bus. The early portion of my career was spent working in consumer protection for the federal government and doing graphic and web design for local agencies. Now I feel so lucky to be pursuing artistry as a business and as a means of connecting with people and helping them connect with others in their lives, especially right now when we are all rather isolated from each other. My artwork is a way of giving an outlet to my sentimental, nostalgic streak, and it's also my means of stress relief -- I love the feeling of flow that I sometimes achieve when I am making artwork. My inspiration for creating artwork that captures moments of connection comes from my personal journey through the emotions of new motherhood. When I became a mom in 2013, I was blown away by my feelings of connection to my daughter. Over the past few years, during her early childhood and that of my son's (born two years later), I've experienced extreme joy in those connections, as well as sorrow at the passing of each phase of my children's development. My nursing relationships with each child held some of the most poignant moments of my life, and gave me a peaceful feeling of being exactly where I needed and wanted to be. I love the thought of helping others hold onto the feelings that accompany those special phases, relationships, and places of life, by commemorating them through artwork.
